Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is the drainage from surface mining, deep mining or tailings dumps and is typically highly acidic with elevated levels of dissolved metals.
Acid mine drainage streams are formed by a combination of microbial and geo-chemical reactions that take place when water comes into contact with iron disulphide (pyrite) minerals. The metals remain in solution until such time as the pH increases to a point where precipitation occurs.
Either as a stand-alone ion exchange unit to remove transition elements or, in conjunction with up-stream technologies such as membranes to achieve acid recovery, the Purity System Inc. resin range is admirably suited to the treatment of most acid mine drainage streams. In many cases the treatment may be cash flow positive by the sale or re-use of the recovered acid and value metals.
