Stainless steel plants, worldwide, produce waste streams high in value metal content such as nickel, chromium, manganese and zinc that provide disposal concerns. It has been successfully demonstrated, in conjunction with other technologies, that these metals may be recovered on a cash-flow positive basis. In many instances, zero waste stream disposals are possible at no overall cost increase to the plant. The technical viability of this process is centered on the capability of the Purity Systems Inc. resins to operate in acidic environments while retaining high selectivity for the target metals.

Waste water and by-product streams containing low concentrations of metals are common throughout industrial processes, for example in the metal finishing industry rinse effluents, drag out tank solutions and floor spillages all contribute to aqueous streams requiring treatment. Generally, such solutions are treated by precipitation before the waste is disposed of through waste disposal companies. Due to the exceptional process liquor operating tolerances of the Purity Systems Inc. ion exchange resin products such waste solutions may be able to be treated onsite on a cash flow positive basis as opposed to a cash flow negative basis with treatment by waste disposal companies. In many instances, in association with membranes, acid recovery is possible. Any sludge resulting from waste stream precipitation may be able to be treated onsite by leaching, typically acidic, with value metal recovery by PSI ion exchange and Purity Systems Inc. can advise on leach methods as required.

If the process has the primary value metal in solution then recovery by PSI ion exchange resin may be a cost effective alternative when compared to existing recovery methods. Alternatively, where there are impurities in solution along with the primary target metal, then the PSI ion exchange materials may be able to remove these impurities, liquor matrix dependent
