PRIMARY Pt, Pd METAL RECOVERY

With the current increases in prices for platinum and palladium there has been increased industry focus on the recovery of these elements not only by resource companies and mining houses but, increasingly, from the recycling industry. The PSI WP-1® is admirably suited to the recovery of platinum and palladium from HIGHLY ACIDIC liquors at pH 0 to pH 1 with optimum pH of 0
At pH 0 WP-1® will strongly load both Pt & Pd whilst rejecting all else in the solution, including base metals and other impurities. Indicative loading capacities for WP-1 at pH 0 are Pt @ 125 mg/g and Pd @ 195 mg/g. The matrix of the acidic solution into the resin has no effect on the Pt & Pd removal with the exception of hydrofluoric acid that, if present, must be removed prior to the ion exchange circuit. The value metals can be recovered in a number of ways such as elution of platinum with 4M ammonia which will leave the palladium that can be sequentially eluted with hot acid. As WP-1® has a silica gel base this resin can be easily calcined by smelters, or others, and this process route does offer some attractive financial outcomes.

Rhodium separation is solution matrix and process dependent – please contact Purity Systems Inc. for applications advice.
