WP-2
WP-2® is a non-styrene ion exchange resin containing an iminoacetic acid functional group that may be used to selectively recover high purity nickel from complex leach liquors found in mining and industrial waste treatment. The resin has been formulated so that metal recovery takes place by ion exchange mechanisms, molecular size and geometry affinity, and reversible chemical reactions.
- Dependent on pH of pregnant liquor: At pH < 3.3 WP-2® co-loads ferric iron (rejects ferrous iron), copper, nickel & cobalt
- At pH > 3.3 the resin will begin to co-load aluminium, lead, zinc, manganese and cadmium.
- Designed to reject sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium where pH < 9.
-
During the resin loading stage a number of metals co-load and are then displaced by metals with stronger binding affinities. For example, nickel will displace cobalt and copper will displace nickel.
- WP-2® is being used to recover high purity nickel from complex feed solutions including heap leach solutions containing high magnesium and aluminum.
- Most complex feed solutions contain a variety of metals along with the target metal nickel. These contaminating metals usually include iron along with metals dissolved in the leach process.
- The WP-2® technology relies on the resin’s ability to reject virtually all of the ferrous iron present. Provided the pregnant liquor stream contains only ferrous iron, has all copper removed, and the PLS pH is < 3 (pH 2 optimum), it is probable that a high purity nickel elute product can be obtained cost effectively.
